Welcome to a feature where I have imagined a question in order to make a post out of me answering that question.
I have called this style of posts ‘IQ’, which is of course short for ‘Imaginary Questions’.
I once read a blog where this sort of post was called Frequently Unasked Questions, which looks good at first but then you realise how it reads when initialised. I have no aversion to using initialisations otherwise, and I don’t expect anyone will get IQ confused with anything else.
The IQ’s could be about anything, but more often than not, they’re not.
Anyway, let’s get started.
IQ: Why do you have a category called ‘edgeways‘? I’m not really sure what it’s meant to mean.
Ah. OK, you’ve heard of the phrase ‘can’t get a word in edgeways’? Although some cultures use the word ‘edgewise’ because they’re odd?
Well, edgeways are my blog post equivalents to what happens when the person to who you have just moments ago complained to about that very thing replies to you ‘Well… go on then.’
This generates a pause, a splutter, and then an immediate and involuntary bout of complete rambling nonsense, in order to try to justify that you did have a coherent and intelligent point of view to offer on this occasion, if only you could be listened to for a change.
However, in all honestly you weren’t expecting that you would get the chance to say it–and, on further internal reflection, you are not sure that you can remember what it was, had probably not thought it through properly and are now just generally bumbling and meandering in the hope that some sort of direction will present itself somewhere along the way–perhaps helped by either GPS, an object in the room you can see, or suddenly remembering an amusing but interesting fact you read on Twitter about Penguins.
Thank you for your question.
